About This Day

Porthgwidden Beach
Sunrise: 8.09am - 22nd January 2019

“Flaring skies”

There was quite a song westerly wind this morning so Porthgwidden provided a little shelter in this direction. There was a fortunate gap in the clouds over on the horizon revealing some sky where the sun was due to rise creating some lovely colours and drama.

The sea state was very stormy pushing some big waves a long way up the beach so a good opportunity to get a mixture of wet sand reflections, colours in the sky and movement in the water.

About mid shoot the clouds towards the South took on a lovely pinky red hue so I walked up towards the lookup point above Porthgwidden to try and capture these colours across the bay, and then as these started to fade away a more intense colour and energy was coming directly over the horizon so I headed back to the beach to capture more of the sunrise from there.

When the sun did come up it was lovely to see it flaring out from the gap and contrasting with the clouds. Because there was so much going on I had a little play with a few new styles also, rounding off a really fun morning.
